Universiade Exhibition Opens

An exhibition on the Universiade was opened at the Athletes’ Village on the 15th. Among the objects on display are 276 pictures, eight sculptures, and the cases that held the torche of the Beijing and Massey Universities as well as the device used for lighting them.

When foreign visitors hail a taxi in Beijing these days, they shouldn’t be surprised if the driver greets them in English. To elp get taxi drivers ready for the 21st Universiade and the 2008 Olympiad, the Communications Bureau of Beijing Municipal Government made them sit an English test this month. Only those who passed the test were eligible for a new license to drive a taxi.

The American Olympic Committee has sent a team of press officers to cover the 21st Universiade in Beijing. The eight-person team is covering athletics, diving, swimming, gymnastics, judo, volleyball, and basketball, says team leader Jeffrey Howard.
