The first flag-hoisting ceremony after the opening of the Athelets’ Village of the 21st Universiade was held for the South African Delegation at 9:40 this morning.

A Record Breaker

The 21st Universiade in Beijing set a new record for the most participating countries yesterday. One hundred and sixty-six countries have entered, according to the organizing committee, breaking the record of 162 set in the 18th Universiade in Fukuoka, Japan.

Athletes’ Village Opens

The Athletes’ Village of the 21st Summer Universiade was opened with a ceremony in the morning August 15 in the Flag-Raising Square of the Village.

World’s Media Arrive

The event in Beijing has drawn great attention from the world as about 2,400 reporters from 37 countries and regions have sighed up to cover the games, a number that hit a record high in the history of Universiade.
