The annual Banff Mountain Film Festival features the best short films on extreme outdoor sports and is held in a different country each year. In January, Beijing will host the extravaganza when it comes to the country for the first time.
German Christmas Charity Bazaar draws thousands
The annual German Christmas Charity Bazaar is becoming more and more popular with the city’s expatriates. Last Saturday, more than 4,000 people turned up at he German Embassy to go Christmas shopping and get their hands on favorites like bratwursts and German wine.

Volunteers bring computer education to migrant schools first
Four weeks ago, the students at Wende School in Cuigezhuang Village turned on a computer for the first time. The school’s new lab of 20 Loongson-based laptop computers is the first test bed or Greenboard, a Beijing-based volunteer group and a similarly named free curriculum to bring open source software to the Chinese classroom.

Inaugural awards highlight Australian university alumni
Last Saturday was the biggest night of the year for Chinese alumni of Australian universities. Graduates were recognized at the inaugural Australia China Alumni Awards at the Millennium Hotel Beijing. Eight awards were given away, including Australian Alumni of the Year, which went to Hui Wing Mau, also known as Xu Rongmao, chairman of Shimao Property and the country’s third richest man.
