Jude Law is to become a father for the fourth time following a relationship with a woman he is declining to name.

The famously media-shy actor has promised to play a “supportive role” when the baby is born this autumn although he is no longer involved with the child’s mother.

The Bafta-winning star of The Talented Mr Ripley, 36, who has publicly complained about the media attention he receives, wants details of the forthcoming arrival to remain private.

A spokesman said: “I can confirm that following a relationship last year, Jude Law has been advised by the birth mother that he is to be the father of a child due in the autumn of this year.

“He is no longer in a relationship with her but he intends to be a fully supportive part of the child’s life.

“This is an entirely private matter and no further statements will be made.”

But the actor, who has three children with his ex-wife Sadie Frost, is unlikely to be granted the privacy he desires by tabloids long interested by his successful career —- which has seen him earn Oscar nominations for Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr Ripley —- and complicated private life.

The Mirror has already discovered that the woman is seven months’ pregnant and that the baby was conceived during a brief relationship while Law was working in New York on Guy Richie’s forthcoming film Sherlock Holmes.

The actor’s personal life became red-top fodder when he separated from Frost after six years of marriage and became engaged to the much younger Sienna Miller.

He was then forced to publicly apologise to the actress when a tabloid discovered that he was having an affair with the nanny of one of his children.

He has since complained that the paparazzi who frequently trail him are like stalkers.

“The invasion of photographers in a lot of people’s lives is too much,” he said. “If you took away their cameras they would be stalkers and freaks. Most of them are, anyway, or at least they look like it.”

Currently playing Hamlet in the West End, the actor was last week accused of hitting a female photographer after she snapped him visiting a restaurant after a performance.

His spokeswoman said it was an accident as the actor was blinded by camera flashes.
