Brandenburg embraces Italy for inspiration

August 16, 2010  Filed under Dionysus

The Brandenburg’s leader, Paul Dyer, says the newly launched program is ”hugely inspired” by his trip to Italy this year – ”inspired by music, food, language, moments of chaos and moments of serenity”.

The coming season’s repertoire departs from the coronation-style celebratory music of this year, in which Australia’s pre-eminent purveyors of baroque and classical music on period instruments are marking their 21st birthday.

Dyer believes the orchestra has more than proven itself to purists and he now wants it to be ”more loose” in its approach.

”I wanted to get into crossing the boundaries from classical into other mediums of music … and let it all go a little bit [next] year and not be so formal with the mammoth [concerts],” he says.

For the first time, the Brandenburg has launched its next season online, its website providing short film clips to give a musical taste of the concerts at City Recital Hall to supplement its coming written program in a move Dyer called ”part and parcel of moving into the 21st century”.

Neapolitan love songs from the 16th to 18th centuries are the focus in the season opener Amore Italiano, featuring the Accordone tenor Marco Beasley and the harpsichordist Guido Morini. Both have a ”loose and exciting way of performing”, Dyer says.

Campbell will sing in a Handel-rich repertoire while Destrube, a founding director of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and Bezuidenhout will play Mozart.

Baroque music features under the Italian guest director and baroque violinist Riccardo Minasi, with Melissa Farrow and Jamie Hey on baroque flute and cello respectively, alongside the soprano Siobhan Stagg. The Brandenburg Choir also returns for two concerts, one of Vivaldi.
